”The Big Retrofit Challenge matters to us because it recognises a simple truth: decarbonising homes must go hand-in-hand with protecting health and comfort. As buildings become more airtight, indoor air quality can decline unless it is designed in. This competition is a chance to demonstrate a practical, low-energy approach that retrofit teams can deploy quickly, with minimal disruption, and with outcomes residents can actually feel day to day. It opens the door to collaborate with housing providers and delivery partners to validate impact at scale.

Healthy Air Technology
Healthy Air Technology Ltd (HATL) is a clean technology company founded in Oxford n 2018. We develop and manufacture energy-efficient indoor air quality solutions that combine high-grade filtration with our patented catalyst technology to tackle particulates, odours and gaseous pollutants, and to reduce airborne biological contaminants. Our focus is on making healthier indoor environments achievable in real buildings, with products designed for retrofits and operational settings where ventilation upgrades may be constrained by cost, disruption, or building form. Our systems are used across residential, healthcare, education and commercial environments.
The innovation: The Healthy Air Integrated Air Quality Retrofit System
Our innovation is the Healthy Air Integrated Air Quality Retrofit System: a plug-and-operate package combining HEPA-13 filtration with our patented D-Orbital Nano Oxide (DNO) catalyst, and smart control. It delivers continuous air purification with low power draw, reducing reliance on energy-intensive ventilation while improving occupant comfort. The system includes the HA200 Fresh Air Unit, which introduces outdoor air when CO₂ levels rise, and can integrate with other Healthy Air units through a simple mobile app to coordinate air quality management across rooms. The result is a scalable, low-disruption route to healthier, low-energy retrofits.
