Retrofit Workforce
Roadmap
Turning a Green Skills vision into reality
The NHDG’s Retrofit Workforce Roadmap was developed through our Green Skills Working Group in partnership with The Retrofit Academy. The roadmap sets out the scale of the workforce challenge facing the retrofit sector and highlights the key actions needed to build the skills, training and workforce capacity required to deliver large-scale home decarbonisation across the UK.
The roadmap reflects input from industry experts and sets out a long-term vision for addressing skills gaps, supporting workforce development and embedding retrofit into mainstream training pathways. While produced several years ago, many of the challenges and opportunities it identifies remain relevant today and continue to inform discussions around skills, training and workforce growth across the sector.
Alongside the roadmap, the Green Skills Working Group explored the role of area-based delivery in supporting local skills development, creating jobs and ensuring communities can benefit from the transition to warmer, healthier and more energy-efficient homes.
Leading a race to the top
The roadmap highlighted a number of priorities for industry and government, including:
- Improving awareness of retrofit careers and their role in delivering net zero.
- Making it easier to access and navigate available skills funding.
- Integrating retrofit across existing industry training programmes.
- Creating clearer pathways into long-term retrofit careers.
- Expanding the availability of high-quality retrofit training and accredited trainers.
- Establishing recognised standards and career frameworks for retrofit roles.
While policy, funding and industry priorities have evolved since the roadmap was published, its core ambition remains unchanged: ensuring the UK has the skilled workforce needed to deliver high-quality home decarbonisation at scale.
